Taking the Mystery Out of the Process
One of the biggest sources of anxiety for patients considering stem cell therapy in Colombia isn't the treatment itself — it's the unknown. What actually happens when you arrive? What does the procedure feel like? How long does everything take? This guide walks through the entire experience day by day, from your first virtual consultation to returning home.
Most stem cell treatments in Colombia require 3–7 days depending on the protocol. Joint injections (knee, hip, shoulder) are the quickest at 2–3 days. Anti-aging IV protocols run 2–3 days. Neurological and autoimmune protocols require 5–7 days. Plan your trip accordingly.
Before You Travel
4–6 Weeks Before: Initial Consultation
Your journey starts with a virtual consultation — usually free. You'll discuss your condition, symptoms, medical history, and goals with a physician or patient coordinator. The clinic will review any imaging (MRI, X-ray) and lab work you can provide. Based on this evaluation, they'll propose a treatment protocol with specific cell counts, delivery methods, and pricing.
This is your opportunity to ask questions. How many patients with your condition has the clinic treated? What outcomes do they typically see? What's included in the package? Is the lab INVIMA-certified? A good clinic will answer all of these without hesitation.
2–3 Weeks Before: Logistics
Once you've committed, the clinic's coordinator helps with logistics. Book flights (direct to Medellín or Bogotá from many US cities), confirm accommodation (most packages include hotel), and arrange transfers. You'll receive a pre-travel checklist with any medications to adjust, items to bring, and what to expect on arrival.
US, Canadian, and EU citizens don't need a visa — you'll receive a 90-day tourist stamp on arrival. Bring your passport, insurance information, and all relevant medical records.
The Treatment Trip
Day 1: Arrival
Your clinic's VIP transfer meets you at the airport (usually a private car, sometimes with a bilingual coordinator). Transfer to your hotel, check in, and rest. If you've arrived in Medellín, you'll likely be staying in El Poblado — the safest, most walkable neighborhood with restaurants, cafes, and parks within steps of your hotel.
Some clinics schedule a welcome briefing or light orientation on arrival day. Others let you decompress — especially if you've been traveling all day. Dinner on your own; enjoy the city.
Day 2: Evaluation
Morning appointment at the clinic. The medical team performs an in-person evaluation: physical examination, vital signs, updated bloodwork, and any additional imaging needed. If PRP is part of your protocol, blood is drawn and processed for the following day.
The physician reviews your case in person, confirms or adjusts the treatment plan, and walks you through exactly what will happen during the procedure. You'll sign informed consent documents and have a final opportunity to ask questions.
Afternoon is free. Most patients explore the neighborhood, find a good restaurant, or simply relax before treatment day.
Day 3: Treatment Day
This is the main event, and it's often anticlimactic in the best possible way. For joint injections (knee, hip, shoulder), the procedure takes 30–60 minutes. The physician uses ultrasound guidance to deliver 50 million MSCs directly to the target tissue. You receive local anesthesia at the injection site. Most patients describe mild pressure and minimal pain.
For IV protocols (anti-aging, autoimmune, neurological), you'll be seated comfortably for 2–4 hours while the cells are infused intravenously. Think of it like a long blood donation — except in reverse. Many patients read, watch movies, or nap during the infusion.
For intrathecal delivery (neurological protocols), a lumbar puncture delivers cells directly to the cerebrospinal fluid. This is more involved but still outpatient — you'll rest at the clinic for a few hours afterward and should lie flat for 4–6 hours to prevent headache.
After treatment, you'll receive supplementary therapies depending on your package: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, vitamin IV infusions, pressotherapy, or physical therapy. Then back to the hotel to rest.
Day 4–5: Recovery & Complementary Therapy
Follow-up appointment at the clinic. The medical team assesses your initial response, manages any mild side effects (slight swelling, low-grade fever, fatigue are normal), and administers any remaining complementary treatments.
Most patients feel well enough to enjoy Medellín during recovery days. Light walking, visiting cafes, exploring the botanical garden — the city's temperate climate makes gentle activity pleasant year-round.
Day 5–7: Departure
Final consultation with the physician. You receive a detailed aftercare protocol: activity restrictions, medication guidelines, what to watch for, and scheduled virtual follow-up dates (typically at 30, 90, 180, and 365 days). VIP transfer back to the airport.
After You Return Home
Week 1–2: Take it easy. Some patients experience mild fatigue or a temporary increase in symptoms (especially for joint treatments) as the inflammatory response peaks. This is normal and expected.
Month 1–3: Most patients begin noticing improvement. The anti-inflammatory effects of MSCs kick in first, followed by gradual tissue repair.
Month 3–12: Progressive improvement continues. Virtual follow-up consultations track your progress with standardized outcome measures. Maximum benefit is typically reached at 6–12 months.
Year 1+: Some patients maintain long-term benefit from a single treatment. Others return for "booster" sessions at 12–18 month intervals, particularly for chronic conditions.
