Bottom Line Up Front
Proper preparation before stem cell therapy can meaningfully influence your outcome. Key steps include stopping NSAIDs 1–2 weeks before treatment, bringing recent MRI or imaging, completing baseline lab work, and understanding post-treatment activity restrictions. This checklist covers everything you need to do before arriving at the clinic.
Medications to Stop Before Treatment
NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin) should be stopped 7–14 days before MSC therapy. These drugs interfere with the inflammatory response that MSCs need to function. Corticosteroid injections should not be administered in the treatment area for at least 4–6 weeks before MSC therapy. Blood thinners may need adjustment (consult your prescribing physician). Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is generally acceptable for pain management during the washout period.
Records and Imaging to Bring
Recent MRI of the treatment area (within 6 months for orthopedic cases), any previous X-rays or CT scans, complete medication list including supplements, relevant surgical history, and recent lab work (CBC, metabolic panel, inflammatory markers if available).
Post-Treatment Activity Restrictions
Avoid high-impact activity for 2–4 weeks after injection. Light walking is encouraged from day 1. No NSAIDs for 4–6 weeks after treatment (to allow the inflammatory cascade to proceed). Physical therapy can typically resume at 2–4 weeks with your clinic's guidance. Follow-up imaging (MRI) is usually scheduled at 6 and 12 months to assess treatment response.
